Tourist destination report

Here is a list of the tourist destinations Matty visited in his last two days in town. Remember that Washington, DC, has a lot of great museums and tourist attractions, many of which are free.
-The outside of a garage at 15th and H Northwest whose ramp continues through the garage and continues underground  the four blocks to the White House. No wonder there is a guard out front.
-The Cairo Apartments, the real reason Washington has severe building height restrictions. The Cairo was built in 1894 to a height of 164 feet near 16th and Q Street Northwest. The uproar it caused coupled with several senators' concern that 164 feet was too tall for firefighters to fight fires stirred congress to pass legislation in 1899 that limited building heights to 110 feet, which restriction was raised to 130 feet eleven years later.
-The DuPont Underground. There are nine graffiti laden stairways that descend to areas under DuPont Circle once used for railroad storage. In the past there have been failed attempts to resuscitate the underground as art space and as a food court. Currently some entity has a five year lease on the place. Watch this space.
     - The Holodomor Memorial. Holodomor is Ukrainian for starvation genocide. In the early thirties, Stalin deprived Ukraine of food so successfully that between two and four million people died. It has been postulated he did this in order to quell possible insurgencies. The memorial, dedicated in 2015, is located where Massachusetts Avenue meets North Capital Street.
-There are two statues of a brawny man wrassling a beefy horse outside the building that houses the Federal Trade Commission. Apparently this is how the commissioners view themselves as they restrain the wild beasts attempting to run roughshod over our financial system.
-The C and O Canal Towpath. Mile 0 of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Towpath is in Georgetown. Mile 184, the last mile, is in Cumberland, on the Maryland-West Virginia border.
Yesterday we drove from DC to Harrisonburg, Virginia, a trip that should take two and a half hours. Matty, unsurprisingly, took the scenic route along the Blue Ridge Parkway. He claims it was worth doubling our travel time. He is entitled to his dumb opinions.
Westward ho Monday as we turn right and head to Kansas City.
