    I'd make a Game of Thrones allusion to the Holomodor memorial, except it's a sad event and you don't watch Game of Thrones.

    Is that man-and-a-reluctant-horse sculpture like you and Matty? (Where Matty isn't the horse.)

Ride Around Manhattan, Literally

Some day there will exist a continuous bicycle path around the island of Manhattan along the Harlem, East, and Hudson Rivers and through Battery Park. It will be for cyclists what the Highline has become for pedestrians. As it exists today, however, there are a score of gaps in the route forcing riders into neighborhoods using roads that are not bike-friendly before allowing re-access to the waterside as well as adding miles to the itinerary. It is not for the faint of heart. In fact, if it hadn’t been for the enthusiasm and intrepidness of my riding partner I could not today say that I have circumnavigated Manhattan by bicycle. I will be in New York through the weekend with only a few items on the schedule. Tonight I’ll visit with family. Tomorrow night I’ll attend a play at a theater with some number of offs in its description. Soul sisters

     Apparently this is a soul boat made by a group of women friends from around the country who meet annually and that Kathy was a part of. They made it this past weekend and apparently cast it into the Pacific Ocean at sundown in her memory. She would have been so pleased.       Matty and I are taking a well deserved break at a friend's beach house in Old Lyme, Connecticut. Last night we hung out with our hosts and two Portland friends who have been living in DC the last few years and are heading back west. Tonight it is just us two. I like houses better than motels and tentsites combined and am pretty much in heaven. Tomorrow I head to New York for the first time. I've heard a lot about the place, but refuse to be intimidated. The accents may be different, but I bet the smells are the same.

Snow Day

     On August 14, 1960, John Kennedy paid a visit to Eleanor Roosevelt at Val-Kill, her private home in Hyde Park. They met one-on-one on that Sunday afternoon so he could ask for her endorsement for president. She was concerned about his commitment to civil rights and about the influence his father might have on a Kennedy administration. Apparently he said all the right things convincingly, because he got her endorsement and the rest, as they say...
